Lower Cost Involved
I know what you are thinking, online shows just a few dollars per day more for the full size or luxury models. That may just be for the convenience of the larger car, there are always going to be more costs and fees involved. There are going to be higher taxes, airport fees, insurance coverage, and even fuel surcharges. What was originally only $5 to $10 more a day has now climbed up to $50. Of course, it is solely up to you to decide if that larger car is going to be worth the extra cash.
There are some companies though that will charge you the same amount for an economy vs a compact. What do you do in these cases? Personally, I will still rent the economy class and let me tell you why.
I do not have to tell you how expensive it can be to drive anywhere anymore. Fuel prices are yo-yoing every day and it is impossible to keep up. There are days they are pushing the $4 mark and other days they dip down to $2. Having an economy class car is almost always going to save you precious money on fuel and those dollars do add up per gallon.
Parking Made Easy
Have you ever tried to park one of those larger luxury cars? If you never had, let me tell you it is not an easy task, especially if you have to parallel park in the city. If you plan on just parking in a lot you should be fine, but that city parking is going to drive you crazy!
Most of the larger cars will have all the bells and whistles outfitted in them. They have GPS, Onstar, Bose speakers, and even heated seats. The question is do you really need all that for a few days?
For most of us as long as we can listen to some music, keep the car a comfortable temperature, and adjust the seats we should be fine. Plus trying to learn all those features and drive at the same time is too much of a distraction.
Here is a secret the car rental company is never going to tell you. Many times they simply upgrade customers at random to better cars without ever being asked to.
In addition, you very well may get a coupon for a free upgrade on your next car rental. In fact, a simple search online can yield a dozen or more free upgrade codes that you can use on this purchase.
Remember that accidents occur everyday for people renting cars. Do you really want to have to foot the bill for an expensive luxury car? Having the economy class will be a much lower cost and value of the other.
If you have special needs during a trip like carting your family around, a larger car is going to be the better choice. However, if it is just you, the open road, and a final destination it is simply best to rent the economy class car. It is going to be a much simpler drive that will save you more money in the long run.
